Every location has its own quirks, and Arizona has a few that catch out-of-town couples off guard. Here are the five things I make sure every couple eloping here actually knows before their day.
1. Watch the Calendar for Monsoon Season
If you’re eloping between July and September, Arizona’s monsoon season brings fast-moving afternoon storms — dramatic skies (genuinely incredible for photos) but also real lightning risk on exposed rock formations. I build a backup window into the timeline for any summer elopement, and I’d rather move your ceremony by two hours than have you standing on top of a rock formation when a storm rolls in.
2. Golden Hour Math Is Different Here Than You Think
Arizona’s low humidity and clear skies mean the “magic hour” window is often longer than couples expect — but it also means the light changes fast once the sun actually starts dropping behind the rocks in places like Sedona, where the horizon isn’t flat. I plan ceremony timing around this, not around a generic “sunset time” from a weather app.
3. Sun Protection Isn’t Optional — Even in “Mild” Months
Even in cooler months, Arizona sun is intense at elevation and in open desert. I always tell my couples: reapply sunscreen more than feels necessary, and if your ceremony or portraits run 2+ hours, plan a shaded rest stop into the day. Heat exhaustion sneaks up faster than people expect, even when it doesn’t feel that hot yet.
4. Know What You Might Run Into on the Trail
Rattlesnakes, javelinas, and scorpions are all part of the Arizona desert — not something to be scared of, but something to actually be aware of, especially if your ceremony spot involves any hiking. Stick to marked trails, watch where you step near rock crevices, and don’t reach into anything you can’t see into.
5. Some of the Best Spots Need a Permit (or Aren’t Actually Public Land)
Popular photo spots like parts of Papago Park or Camelback Mountain have rules about ceremonies, group size, or commercial photography that aren’t always obvious from Instagram. I handle permit and location logistics as part of booking — but it’s worth knowing this isn’t always a “just show up” situation.
