If you’re not the best planner but you want your partner to have an amazing experience when you propose, this post is for you. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need a rough idea and a little help getting to the yes.
Here’s what I actually recommend for locations, how the surprise part gets pulled off without your partner catching on, and everything else you’d want to know before reaching out to a Sedona proposal photographer.
My favorite proposal spots in Sedona
Lover’s Knoll. A full 360-degree view of Sedona with a very minimal hike, about 2 minutes. It gets a lot of foot traffic at sunset, so if you want more privacy, there are other spots nearby worth considering too.
Crescent Moon Ranch. There’s a paid entry fee here, but you get Cathedral Rock in the background, possible water elements, and flat terrain, which makes it easy to find a few different compositions in one visit.
Secret Slick Rock. About a 10-minute hike, and it gives you a view of Cathedral Rock without having to hike Cathedral Rock itself.
Alcantara Vineyards & Winery. This one’s a little different because the venue has its own built-in proposal package, so booking me there works alongside what they already offer, including a short tour around different spots on the property. It genuinely catches people off guard, in the best way.
My general philosophy on locations: minimal-hike spots matter. The partner being proposed to should get the views and a little bit of walking in, not end up sweaty and worn out right before the moment happens.
How the surprise actually works
This is probably the biggest thing that separates a proposal shoot from a normal session. I have to be there, capturing everything, without the other partner catching on.
Here’s how it typically goes:
- We talk it through first. In our initial consultation, we go through your ideas together: what you’re picturing, what you already have planned, the spot, and importantly, what the story is going to be, meaning the cover story that gets your partner there without suspicion.
- We build a story that actually works. I’ve helped pull off a picnic service, where I set up a full picnic, basket and all, and the couple thought they were just having a picnic together until the proposal happened right in the middle of it. I’ve also helped with a “Will you marry me?” blanket laid out on the ground, while I stayed nearby looking like I just happened to be there, not working.
- Day-of secrecy. I always ask to be saved in the surprised partner’s phone under a fake name, a “friend,” “mom,” whatever makes sense, so if I need to text or call to coordinate timing, nothing gives it away.
What I need from you, and what it costs
Here’s the honest truth: you don’t need to have the whole thing figured out. Even just an idea or a rough feeling of what you want is enough to start. We’ll figure out the rest together.
A proposal session is $700 flat. That includes the planning, the session itself (the moment plus photos afterward), and a fast turnaround: your full gallery within 24 hours.

One of my favorite examples of how this works is a picnic proposal. I set up a full picnic, basket and all, and the couple genuinely believed they were just having a nice picnic together. The proposal happened right in the middle of it, completely unexpected on one side and completely planned on the other. It’s a story I’ve used more than once because it works so well, not a one-off.
Advice for the proposing partner
The biggest mistake I see: not having a planning meeting beforehand to nail things down, and not actually practicing what you’re going to say. I’ve heard from a lot of people who blacked out in the moment and couldn’t remember what they’d planned to say. A quick practice run goes a long way.
A few Sedona-specific tips: the best time of year is winter, spring, or fall, not summer, which gets too hot for a comfortable hike or a comfortable moment. And I’d pick a weekday over a weekend if you can, mainly for crowd control at the locations.
